We are currently seeking a motivated individual for the Construction Materials Application Engineer position within the Covanta Metals Management (CMM) group at Covanta. The Application Engineer supports the execution of engineering and business plan objectives for beneficial reuse of products derived from Energy-from-Waste (EfW) ash as construction materials in market segments including but not limited to asphalt, concrete, cement or the general construction industry. The Application Engineer is responsible for identifying potential end-users. She/he will analyze potential customer application requirements to develop solutions utilizing our construction materials. This will aid in developing substantial product knowledge within application types and market segments that will create opportunities and help set the direction for operations, production, and sales/marketing efforts in the area of beneficial reuse of EfW ash.

 This job description provides an overview of responsibilities and tasks to be performed.  It is not intended to be an all-inclusive job description as needs tend to change over time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand aggregate and construction end-user needs/drivers and develop solutions that not only meet their needs, but also align with Covanta’s expectations and goals for beneficial reuse of ash.
  • Conduct research, evaluate studies and results to determine end-uses for our aggregates. The end-uses may include applications in traditional aggregate markets, as well as developing new, highly innovative end-uses.
  • Maintain expert level of product knowledge and application through development and understanding of construction material specifications, testing standards and actual product testing using our aggregates.
  • Specify aggregate chemical and physical property testing; ensure that appropriate testing is conducted and analyze the results of these tests. Understand and assist in development of mix designs using Covanta aggregates for various applications and product tests.
  • Research and conduct reviews on DOT and other specifications; develop specifications for prospective projects and generate written summaries.
  • Specify and complete field trials and testing to determine end-user needs.
  • Provide technical assistance to marketing team. Technical assistance includes but is not limited to intercompany/customer location travel and ability to present solutions "face to face" with perspective end-users; the ability to articulate technology and product properties to both business and technical users.
  • Communicate regularly with team members on key technical, business and market activities to ensure information is disseminated on a timely basis. Write detail-oriented and analytical technical reports regarding field trials, technology evaluations and application meetings. Ensure that research and data is entered accurately and in a timely manner on the company’s shared drive and/or other required software system in a standardized, clear, and identifiable manner.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with industry associations and organizations to stay current on technology changes that could impact our business.
  • Complete special research projects as needed.
  • Perform a variety of other job-related tasks and duties as needed and assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Construction, Materials Engineering or related field of study preferred. 
  • Minimum of 5+ years of industry experience, preferably in the asphalt, concrete or cement industry. Equivalent combinations of education and experience/training may be considered.
  • DOT Certifications for Asphalt/Concrete, mix design, aggregate testing and sampling certifications are preferred. Certifications in Soils & Aggregate Testing and Hot Mix Asphalt are a plus.
  • Proficient in aggregate testing and aggregate consensus properties; Experience in developing asphalt and/or concrete mix designs that met DOT specifications and performance expectations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic operating procedures and mechanics of asphalt, cement and/or concrete plants.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Aptitude to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and market data and effectively present information and convey technical solutions clearly through meetings, reports, phone calls and emails ports and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients and customers.       
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, presentation and technical writing skills. General understanding of business functions and financials.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, and handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute both independently and in a team environment.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, MS Word, MS Power Point; Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, recordkeeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Six-Sigma certification desired.
