External Description:

Primary Purpose:

Conduct all phases of assigned environmental, health and safety (EH&S) audits. Provide clients with high quality, value-added audit services for all Sempra Energy regulated and non-regulated businesses.


  • Plan and conduct multiple audits of Company operations to ensure compliance with environmental and safety policies and procedures, laws and regulations, and industry and company best practices. 
  • Assist in the development and execution audit programs that assess:
    • the design and effectiveness of controls intended to ensure compliance with environmental and safety programs;
    • the work practices of employees and contractors to ensure compliance with environmental permits and safety regulations ; and
    • the reliability and integrity of environmental and safety reporting and information.
  • Effectively document the results of audit test work ensuring that conclusions, findings and recommendations are properly supported.
  • Assess risks and recommend changes to improve operations or strengthen business controls, and negotiate solutions or corrective actions.
  • Prepare Audit Reports and communicate audit results to process owners and senior management.
  • Assist with special audit projects and initiatives as assigned.
  • Help lead the effort to meet or exceed the department's annual performance goals, including completion of the annual audit plan.
  • Represent the department as a business partner that adds value in performing audit responsibilities. 
  • Assist in orientation, development, and oversight of Auditors, Consultants and Rotational Staff.
External Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field. Advanced degree in relevant field highly desirable. 
  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related audit/industry experience.
  • Professional certification (e.g., Certified Professional Environmental Auditor, Certified Safety Professional) strongly preferred.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10-25%, including locally (San Diego and Southern California), nationally and internationally.
  • Valid California Driver's License.


  • Thorough understanding of auditing techniques.
  • Understanding of applicable environmental and safety programs and regulations.
  • Must be able to communicate sensitive findings to audit clients and write quality audit reports.
  • Able to be tactful and diplomatic when presenting audit findings and recommendations to management, and in negotiating solutions or corrective actions.
  • Must possess the requisite experience, judgment, and business perspective in environmental, safety, technical, and other fields to develop value-added recommendations on business operations and control issues.
  • Act as a positive, contributing team player, with strong professional commitment.
  • Exhibit conflict resolution and negotiating skills.
  • Strong professional commitment with the ability to effectively function within a team structure.
  • Demonstrate a strong initiative and sense of urgency.
