Duties:

 

  • Transmission Lines Engineering (TLE) has a challenging opportunity for an Engineering Team Lead for a team of professional engineers based at BC Hydro’s Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC. The successful candidate will manage and lead a technical team responsible for electrical design aspects of overhead transmission lines 69kV to 500kV.

 

  • The successful candidate will lead and manage internal technical resources and external contractors to deliver on designs, studies and projects involving but not limited to electromagnetic and electrostatic field calculations, AC interference, switching transients, electrical clearances for overhead power lines, transmission line grounding designs, lightning protection, transmission line insulation, corona effects, development of overhead transmission line design standards.

 

  • This position will lead small, medium and large and/or technically complex and high risk projects, primarily related to overhead transmission rights of way and impact on public and private facilities for compliance with public and worker safety requirements.

 

  • This is an exciting technical leadership opportunity for someone who has the ability to manage, develop and sustain a strong and very strategic engineering team.

 

The key accountabilities for TLE electrical design Team Lead are:

 

  • Manages and supervises a team of BC Hydro and/or consulting engineers performing the electrical design aspects of HV (69kV to 500kV) overhead transmission lines with varying complexities and size.

 

  • Ensures that qualified internal and external resources are available and have the appropriate level of expertise and tools to meet work plans; allocates resources to various projects within the work plan; assigns and coordinates work, and provides instructions, advice and guidance to project, technical and administrative staff.

 

  • Provides technical leadership and acts as an expert technical resource responsible for providing professional/technical advice in engineering and projects within and outside of the department.

 

  • May be required to lead and deliver on projects of medium to high complexity and communicate the results to audiences up to and/or including senior management teams.

 

  • Investigates and analyzes challenging or unusual problems of an engineering and project nature, develops alternatives, evaluates risks and applies innovative solutions.

 

  • Reviews and accepts work by internal and external staff to confirm that it meets BC Hydro standards, specifications, good design practices, affordability, safety and constructability criteria.

 

  • Maintains design/project documentation and records during the project life and beyond.

 

  • Assists in the development of team and division objectives and performance measurements and assists in managing the technical and operational performance of the team and division to meet these objectives and other business needs.

 

  • Recruits, trains and develops employees. Appraises staff performance and provides input into an employee development program in order to maintain the required expertise. Leads or assists with sourcing of consultants and managing consulting contracts.

 

  • Collaborates, builds, and maintains relationships with other Engineering Team Leads and with other stakeholders such as Asset Planning, Work Methods and Human Factor, Project Delivery, Capital Construction, Real-time Operations (RTO), and Transmission Field Operations to advance the delivery of BC Hydro’s overall work plan.

 

  • Provides safety leadership to the team, ensuring team members have applicable safety training for their work, the activities in the annual safety plan are completed, and team members perform their work safely.

 

  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with the consulting and contractor community.

Requirements

  • The successful candidate will be required to work from the BC Hydro Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC.

 

  • Shall be a Professional Engineer registered with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) or other Canadian Provincial Professional Association(s).

 

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. or M.A.Sc degrees in electrical engineering with emphasis on electric power systems and recognized by Canadian Universities. However, candidates with B.A.Sc. degree will be considered at a level commensurate with their relevant working experience.

 

  • A minimum of 12 years of working experience in the electric power utility industry involving electrical safety aspects of high voltage transmission lines and other high voltage equipment.

 

  • Working knowledge of grounding software CDEGS (ROW Pro and HiFreq) and WinIGS, EMTP. Familiarity with COMSOL will be considered an asset.

 

  • In-depth knowledge of AC interference analysis and applicable standards and computer applications.

 

  • Working knowledge of and familiarity with national and international standards, design codes and guides such as IEEE 80, IEEE 81, IEEE 1243, IEEE 516, IEEE C95.6, CSA C22.3 No. 1, CSA C22.3 No. 6.

 

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, particularly technical writing and ability to communicate with clarity complex technical matters to technical and nontechnical audiences.

 

  • Demonstrated ability and passion in conflict management, work leadership, technical direction, communication, team building, and coaching skills. Strong interpersonal skills required; ability to relate and discuss issues with anyone from electricians to senior management.

 

  • Excellent organizational and management skills.

 

  • Must be a self-starter.

 

Additional Information:

 

  • The successful candidate will be required to work from the BC Hydro Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC.

 

  • The successful candidate will be required to do traveling to sites and locations within BC, including remote locations and sometimes outside of the province/country.

 

  • A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain the following requirements in good standing: Driver's License Type = Class 5
